For the 02+ Impreza

-Things to keep in mind when installing the column

Don’t ever hammer on the column.
The column in designed to collapse in case of an accident where you come in contact with the steering wheel.
Hammering on the column will collapse it and make it too short to install.

You will have to remove the air bag out of your steering wheel to install our column.
If you are not careful the air bag may go off.
If you do not feel comfortable handling an air bag have a professional install the column for you.

-Tools you will need that you may not have

Steering wheel puller
Small chisel (for taking the bolts out to remove ignition)
Metric sockets 10mm-17mm deep and shallow
Philips and straight blade screwdriver
Jack and jack stands (to get under the car)
Safety spline key number

-Directions

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal off the battery
  2. Press down on the brake pedal to make sure all the voltage is out of the emergency system.  (prevent the air bag from going off)
  3. Jack the front of the car up, and support with jackstands.
  4. Remove the top bolt (closest to the column) in the engine bay that connects the column to the steering rack. 

  1. Remove the interior panels around the steering column
  2. Remove the 4 safety spline bolts to remove the air bag part of the steering wheel.
  3. Disconnect the plug carefully from the air bag.
  4. Put the air bag face up somewhere safe.
  5. Remove the nut in the middle of the steering wheel.
  6. Use the steering wheel puller and remove the steering wheel.
  7. Disconnect all the plugs around the column.
  8. Remove the two bolts holding the column up in the car.
  9. The column should now be free from the car. Check to make sure you disconnected everything.
  10. Pull the column out of the car carefully.
  11. Remove the parts off the column
    1. The controls for the turn signals in one piece.
    2. The steering wheel clock and white piece of plastic can be removed as one piece.
    3. Remove the steel blocking plate to make access to the ignition part easier.

  1. Take a chisel and make a grove in the top of the bolt holding the Ignition on.
  2. Take a straight blade screw driver and remove the screws.  Loosen each one equally at a time so they don’t bind.
  3.  transfer the ignition over to the new column, attach with the 6mm allen bolt included with the column.

  1. Install the Steel blocking plate on the new column.
  2. Install the controls part
  3. Install the steering wheel clock spring.
  4. Remove the white steering wheel bushing from the end of the stock column.
  5. Cut a 1/4” section out of the white bushing it should slide over the quickener and the gap should be where the brace is on the quickener.
  6. This white bushing will fill in the hole in the fire wall
  7. Bend the corner of this support over so the quickener will clear when you install the column.

  1. Cut the excess pin off the side of the gas pedal show in picture.

  1.  Bend this bracket down out of the way so that you can pivot the column up into place to bolt it in.  Bend bracket back after you bolt the column in.

  1. Put the column though the hole in the fire wall.
  2. The two bolts attached into the top of the quickener to the brace should be straight up inside the car.

  1. Have someone help you slide the splines into the part where it connects to the steering rack. Install bolt.

  1. Mount the steering column up with the two bolts that hold it up in the car.

  1. Clock the steering wheel spring properly, (The directions how to are written on the clock spring) and install the steering wheel.
  2. Reconnect all the plugs you have removed.
  3. Go over the entire column and check all the bolts to be tight
  4. Install the plastic pieces on the steering column
  5. Check that all the plugs are connected and re-connect the car battery.
  6. Remove the car from jack stands and take the car for a spin.
